SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): WM has announced opening of new recycling facility in Cleveland, Ohio last Friday. The 100,000 square-foot materials recovery facility (MRF), built at an investment of $30 million, is slated to become the company’s primary processing hub in Ohio.

According to company press release, the new state-of-the-art single stream recycling facility will help to boost recycling rates in the region. Apart from expanding the types of materials accepted for recycling, it will also ensure production of better quality materials. The facility features optical sorting scanners for both fibers and plastic and will have an annual processing capacity of 144,000 tons of materials. It is expected to serve over half a million customers.

The facility is expected to create nearly 50 jobs in the region.

The project is part of WM’s previously announced plan to make investment of nearly $1 billion in recycling infrastructure across the country by 2026. The new or automated MRFS that are part of the plan will add approximately 2.8 million tons to WM’s total processing capacity. The string of modern facilities will also boost the volume of recyclables managed by the company to almost 25 million tons per year by the end of the current decade.
