Scrap Metal Theft Laws for Recyclers in the United States

Laws and regulations have been put in place in all 50 States, to help prevent scrap and metal thefts across the United States. These laws impose varying requirements - including purchase restrictions, recordkeeping requirements, and oftentimes reporting and hold responsibilities - on scrap metal purchasers. Each state provides a unique set of laws and requirements for dealers, law enforcement, and businesses in this industry. There is no uniformity between state laws, and states regularly amend their laws to better address the problems they face.
