U.S. DOE Awarded $62M in Battery Recycling Grants

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $62 million in grant funding for consumer battery collection and recycling. A total of 17 recipients were selected to receive the funding in support of their innovation projects aimed at boosting collection, sorting and recycling of batteries.

The statement issued by the DOE noted that recycling of used batteries reduces demand for new materials, thereby allowing domestic industry to produce at lower costs.

One among the grant recipients was AMP, which provides automated sorting technologies, including AI and robotics. The $6.3M funding willsupport its initiative to “demonstrate the viability of automated characterization and sorting of batteries within e-waste”, the company said.

The New York City Department of Sanitation will use the $2.15 million grant to hold nearly 200 mobile battery collection drop-off events across the five boroughs, which will result in collection of at least 35,000 pounds of batteries.

Li Industries Inc. received $7 million to develop an automated, integrated sorting and preprocessing solution, in partnership with Call2Recycle and the Argonne National Laboratory.

Also, California-based ERI received $4.8 million in DOE funding towards development of a web-based educational platform to locate recycling sites and their regulatory norms.
