Recycling Update Narrates Dos and Don’ts to Audience

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Nearly 50 residents attended a workshop, in which dos and don’ts of recycling were explained in detail. The workshop was hosted at the Pasquotank County Library last week by the local environmental group Green Saves Green and was attended by residents from Pasquotank and Perquimans counties.

The workshop was led by Kathy Russell, community outreach and education coordinator of Chesapeake, Virginia-based TFC Recycling; Brad Gardner, Pasquotank Solid Waste Director and Janice Browne, Pasquotank’s recycling coordinator.

Russell and Gardner focused on what should and should not be placed in recycling. Plastic bottles designated as 1 or 2 are the ones classified as being recyclable. The designated number could be easily identified by checking the bottom of the bottle. It is not necessary to remove caps from plastic bottles, other than soap bottles which have caps with metal springs, they noted.

The aerosol cans cooking oils must be thrown out with regular household garbage. Small batteries can be thrown out with the regular trash. Shredded paper must not be placed directly into recycling. Instead they urged residents to place shredded paper in paper bags and staple or tape the bags in order to close them before being placed in the recycling.
