New Study Recommends Recycling Overhaul in Florida

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The new study, conducted by a Florida Polytechnic professor, has called for overhaul of recycling systems in Florida. The recommendation comes amid cancelling or alteration to recycling programs by six municipalities in the state. The report, prepared for Florida Recycling Partnership Foundation, investigates the economics of current and future recycling programs.

The study points out that the e current recycling industry is challenged with higher contamination rates, lower participation rates, higher processing costs and volatility in prices. Over the past decade, the average single-family residential recycling rate in Florida remained around 30%. The recycling of paper products accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total recycling rate. The annual waste management costs for average households have witnessed notable jump during this period.

The report recommends several key changes including changes to the collection frequency, introduction of larger capacity recycling bins, providing necessary education to promote recycling participation. The elimination of the program may lead to tremendous increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Meantime, limiting the materials accepted, may lead to slight increase in costs and emissions, it noted.
