City of Kamloops Announced Updates to Residential Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy announced key updates to its Recycling Regulation, effective January 1, 2023. Accordingly, it has expanded the list of items that could be dropped at recycling bins and depots.

Previously, the residential recycling bins accepted only plastic or paper cups that were purchased for take-out. Now the program will also accept plastic and paper cups purchased at stores. Similarly, while only aluminum take-out containers were accepted before, it now adds aluminum foil, pie plates, and baking trays to the list of accepted items.

Marcia Dick, the City’s Solid Waste Reduction Coordinator observed that many of the recently added items used to be placed in recycling by residents. The updates officially makes these items part of its recycling program. The changes are attributed to how provincial recycling program is funded and how recycling works in the province, Dick said.

The City noted that households that receive curbside organics collection will continue with weekly organics collection and alternating biweekly garbage and recycling collection. Those who wish to drop off materials at various site locations are requested to call ahead in order to confirm that the site accepts specific items.
