Casella Opened the Doors of Upgraded Connecticut MRF


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster):  Casella Waste Systems, Inc. opened the doors of its upgraded material recovery facility (MRF) in Willimantic, Connecticut.

On Monday, May 19, the event was marked with a celebratory ceremony that was attended by around 100 renowned visitors. Tom DeVivo, the mayor of Windham, as well as representatives from Casella and Machinex, the MRF technology vendor, spoke at the event.

Modern equipment was installed as part of the facility refurbishment. It featured an upgraded fire suppression system, new pavement, a replacement tipping floor, lighting, electrical infrastructure, and a new sorting system. Additionally, the business has significantly increased electrical efficiency in collaboration with Eversource.

The MRF could handle about 60,000 tons of recyclable materials annually before the renovation. It is anticipated that the improvements will enable it to process twice as much.

The company is excited to invest in new technology in Connecticut, said John W. Casella, Chairman and CEO, in response to the news. He noted that the improvements will assist shift more materials out of the trash stream and into better and higher uses.
