An annual retail business sales fee, a fee on the sale of new tires, and a fee on solid waste dumped in landfills all contribute to the Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive funds. The Scrap Tire monies, which come from a $1 levy on new tires bought in Nebraska, are also a part of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive program. 58 scholarships totaling $2,500,919 were given out in 2025.

A levy levied against specific producers, distributors, and retailers of goods that frequently contribute to litter is used to fund Litter Reduction and Recycling. 54 litter grants totaling $4,296,438 were given out in 2025.

"The Department is thankful to support local initiatives that encourage waste and litter reduction, and these will have a significant impact on its communities," stated NDEE Interim Director Kara Valentine.

The grant applications for 2026 will be accepted from June 2025 onwards.
