SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): With July 4th celebrations on deck, Rumpke is looking to keep things fun and safe.
According to Rumpke’s Area Safety Manager Randy Broadright, threats such as burnt trash cans, dumpster fires and truck fires increase during this time of year.
“Annually, we see an increase in bin, dumpster, and truck fires the days and weeks following the Independence Day holiday,” Broadright says. “If not properly handled, fireworks, pool chemicals, lithium-ion batteries and charcoal embers can cause dangerous situations for our employees, facilities and the motoring public.
To help keep these risks as low as possible, Rumpke has a few tips to keep in mind:
Tips to keep your pets safe around fireworks
To prevent reignition, soak all spent fireworks, charcoal embers and ash before disposing them.
Take empty propane tanks back to the store or to a gas station, where they can be refilled.
Pool chemicals must not be trashed or recycled. Contact your local solid waste district for options.
Lithium-ion batteries also can’t be trashed or recycled. Contact your local solid waste district for options.
There are a few items that can be recycled though.
What are Ohio’s fireworks laws during the Fourth of July?
“For holiday parties, this would include your bottles, jugs, tubs, cans and paper and clear plastic cups,” says Jeff Meyers, Communications Manager.
