Alaska’s Remote Communities Received $4 Million in Recycling Grants


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Three Aleutian organizations were selected as recipients of the grants under Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) program by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska, the Aleut Corp. and the Aleutian-Pribilof Islands Association will receive more than $4 million in recycling grants.

As per press release, the Qawalangin Tribe intends to use the grant funds towards building a recycling hub in Aleutian Islands. Also, the grant money will be used to educate residents on the recycling process.

The Aleut Corp. noted that the funds will be used to strengthen infrastructure so as to ensure better and effective solid waste management and recycling on the island. The grant for Adak- the westernmost municipality in the U.S. will be used to fund purchase of new equipment such as excavator and baler and to upgrade one of its buildings.

Meantime, the Aleutian-Pribilof Islands Association (APIA) will use the SWIFR funds to develop a regional plan to reduce landfill usage and incineration. The necessary information needed to implement the project will be provided by the Aleut Corp. Also, it will use new equipment on Adak to boost the regional recycling efforts.
