EPA Awarded $4M Grant to Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Jane Wilch, City of Iowa City’s Recycling Coordinator announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded grant of $4 million to the city’s Landfill and Recycling Center.

The grant will help the city to boost its recycling infrastructure. The City plans huge expansion and improvement to its existing composting facility. The proposed expansion will provide notable improvement in the volume of organic materials that the facility could accept. The design phase of the expanded composting center is currently in progress with construction expected to begin next spring.

Currently, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center has a capacity to process around 15,000 tons of food waste per year. The new grant from EPA will raise this capacity to nearly 20,000 tons per year. The current capacity doesn’t allow it to accept food waste from restaurants.

Wilch noted that the City’s longstanding commitment to sustainability as one of the reasons why it has been chosen as a recipient of the grant. The city has been trying to make composting easier for its residents over the past decade. It is a great time for considering expansion of the facility, Wilch said.
