Swampscott to Launch Fully Automated Trash Collection Under New Five-Year Contract

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Town of Swampscott is preparing to transition to a fully automated trash collection system under a new five-year contract with Republic Services. According to officials, the move is aimed at improving efficiency, worker safety, and long-term cost sustainability.

While unveiling the proposed changes during a recent Solid Waste Advisory Committee meeting, Town Administrator Nick Connors said that the new contract will take effect on July 1. Furthermore, he noted that automated trash collection will begin immediately, but the rollout of the new recycling system may face a delay of up to one month.

Under the new system, residents will use standardized carts compatible with automated collection trucks. The town will provide each eligible household with a 35-gallon trash cart and a 95-gallon recycling cart.

According to Connors, making automation has become a more financially sustainable option, as maintaining manual collection would have increased costs by roughly $475,000 to $480,000 per year.

The weekly trash and recycling services will continue, while yard waste collection will remain available for seven weeks each year.

The authorities plan to organize a public information forum featuring a presentation and question-and-answer session on June 15 at the local high school to help residents prepare for the transition.
