Phoenix Recycling Secures Permit for Large-Scale Composting Facility in Colorado

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Phoenix Recycling has received approval from La Plata County to develop a large-scale composting facility and wood waste recovery yard in Durango, Colorado. The permitting process took nearly three years to complete.

The permit allows the company to construct a roughly 15-acre facility on County Road 307, across from the Williams Ignacio Natural Gas Plant. The project is expected to cost between $1 million and $2 million and is expected to break ground next year. Once operational, it is expected to create additional jobs.

According to Phoenix Recycling owner Mark Thompson, the facility is designed to divert highly biodegradable materials from landfills. The large-scale composting facility aims to reduce organic waste disposal. Also, it proposes to manage forest debris, thereby reducing wildfire risks.

The permit allows the facility to process a wide range of biodegradable materials, including food waste, food processing residues, biosolids, biodegradable plastics, wood fibers, and animal carcasses. The compost produced at the facility will be marketed to major end users, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The facility will boost efforts to transform waste streams into valuable compost products, providing a sustainable alternative to landfilling organic materials.
