Sedgwick County to offer free e-waste recycling events

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- Do you have an old TV or computer taking up space in your home? You can get rid of it for free this month.

Sedgwick County is offering free electronic waste collection August 13-15 and August 20-22. You can take items to the West Yard at 4701 S. West Street between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Sedgwick County residents and businesses, excluding businesses that sell or recycle electronics, are welcome to take advantage of the collection events.

An out-of-state company will break down and recycle items collected. Hard drives will be destroyed to protect personal information.

Sedgwick County Environmental Project Manager Cindy Le said the events are an opportunity to get rid of old items collecting dust, but recycling and public safety are the main focuses. Le explained that if electronics are not properly disposed of or tossed into a landfill, hazardous chemicals can make their way into the groundwater supply.

The county will take precautions to protect workers and participants from COVID-19. Workers will wear masks and proper PPE. Residents are told to place collection items in their trunk or truck beds if possible and to remain inside their vehicles while workers collect the items.
