Phoenix Opened First of its Kind Plastic Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Phoenix announced opening of a plastic recycling facility, which collects and processes plastic waste into useful products. The Circular Plastics Microfactory is the first of its kind in the locality. The microfactory has a capacity to process between 500 and 1,000 tons of plastic per year.

The facility is run by Arizona State University's Walton Sustainability Solutions Service. It collects, processes and remanufacture local plastic waste for reuse within the community, thus preventing it from being shipped to other states or countries for recycling. The collected plastic waste are processed into pellets, which in turn are pressed into new products. The facility has already entered into partnership with local businesses who are interested to buy pellets produced by it.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony of the facility, supported with city funding, was held near 51st Avenue and Van Buren Street, which was attended by officials from the City of Phoenix, ASU, Goodwill and Hustle PHX.

Walton Sustainability Solutions Service aims to commercialize the project, although it declined to set a timeline for it. The ultimate aim is to operate 10 microfactories in the region, which will provide employment to locals.
