SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Columbus Public Works will offer residents a dedicated opportunity to dispose of hazardous household materials safely during a recycling event scheduled for Saturday, October 10.
The collection will run from 8 a.m. to noon at the Columbus Recycling Center, 8001 Pine Grove Way. Participation is limited to Columbus, Georgia, residents, who must present identification at the site.
A wide range of household chemicals will be accepted, including bleach, ammonia, household cleaners, furniture polish, oven cleaner and insect-control products. Residents may also bring lawn and garden chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and pool treatment products.

The event will accept several types of paint and solvents, including latex and oil-based paints, furniture stripper and paint thinner. Selected electronic equipment, including computers, printers, fax machines, copiers and other consumer electronics, can also be dropped off. However, televisions are excluded from the collection.
The list of accepted items also include used motor oil, oil filters, gasoline, antifreeze, car batteries, lubricants, brake and transmission fluids, car wax, metal polish and light bulbs.
According to officials, the event is designed to divert potentially harmful materials from regular household garbage, by providing residents with a safer disposal option.
