CED Takeback Fund Supports Local Electronics Recycling

West Virginia's Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan established the Covered Electronic Devices Program in 2008 to help ensure electronics manufacturers comply with the state's disposal and recycling requirements.

Manufacturers that have not adopted or implemented a qualifying free take-back or recycling program are subject to varying fees. Those fees are deposited into the state's CED Takeback Fund and used to finance recycling grants for eligible local governments.

The grant program supports recycling initiatives that divert covered electronic devices from the waste stream, including community collection events and ongoing electronics recycling services.

Local Governments Can Apply for CED Recycling Funding

WVDEP limits eligibility for CED recycling grants to municipalities, county commissions and county solid waste authorities.

Individual grants may reach up to $40,000. Under current program rules, the first $20,000 does not require matching funds, while amounts above $20,000 must be matched dollar for dollar by the recipient.

The grant cycle runs from October 1 through September 30.

Funding Expands Electronics Collection Across West Virginia

The nine awards will help participating counties maintain or expand access to proper recycling options for computers, televisions, tablets and other covered electronic devices.

WVDEP also maintains a list of electronics brands with approved manufacturer take-back programs available free to consumers.
