City of Leitchfield Recycling Pick-up to be Outsourced

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Leitchfield in Kentucky is reportedly considering a proposal to outsource the recycling pick-up. The proposal came during a City Council meeting held last Tuesday.

The issue was raised by Councilwoman Terri Haycraft, who noted that many items that could be easily recycled, are instead being disposed of along with trash, as the city lacks a curbside recycling pick-up programme. The recycling drop-off pick up facility provided at Leitchfield Transfer Station is not being utilized by its residents, Haycraft said.

She highlighted the need to revitalize its recycling program. Several other cities in the state have stopped doing curbside recycling pickup by themselves. Instead they have outsourced it to outside companies. Leitchfield could also follow the same model, she said.

According to Haycraft, the rates offered by companies for outsourced garbage pick-up service along with recycling pick-up is much lower than what the city residents pay. However, Wesley Shull, Leitchfield Public Works Director noted that the garbage cans provided to residents would become useless if the garbage and recycling pick-up services are outsourced.

The meeting authorized Shull to reach out to companies and come up with a detailed report on price quotes and other aspects in the next meeting.
