Baltimore County Pilot Program Focuses on Recycling at Apartment Communities

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Bureau of Solid Waste-funded Baltimore County pilot initiative seeks to lower pollution and encourage recycling in apartment complexes. It aims to raise awareness of recycling services and teach locals how to properly recycle specific products.

In order to achieve this, the County's Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) put up stickers in a number of trial program locations to educate residents about recycling containers. Additionally, sustainable recycling tote bags were given to the residents.

The trial program currently includes more than 3,100 apartment units spread over four communities: Morningside Apartments in Owings Mills, Carriage Hill Apartments in Randallstown, Gwynn Oaks Apartments in Windsor Mill, and Twin Ridge Apartment complex in Pikesville. In the future, it hopes to spread into up to ten communities, encompassing approximately 10,000 residential units.

The pilot initiative has assisted in resolving some of the operational challenges associated with recycling in multi-family housing areas, according to Nicholas Rodricks, DPWT's Chief of the Bureau of Solid Waste. He went on to say that the program improves recycling in Baltimore by meeting people where they are.
