The fire incident occurred on 8th March, 2022, which was attended by firefighters from more than a dozen local fire departments. It had damaged nearly all of the equipment and electrical controls of the facility. Fortunately, the fire did not cause any physical injuries. The investigations that followed the incident, concluded that the fire was caused by a rechargeable battery.

Pen Waste made significant upgrades to the facility, by installing new cutting-edge technology and equipment. The facility now features state-of-the-art safety features including fire detection and suppression systems. In addition, it now houses modern material recovery technologies, thus resulting in improved throughputs.

The company has decided to carry out greater public education regarding rechargeable batteries and the potential dangers caused by them. It called for joint efforts by all stakeholders in safely disposing of rechargeable batteries.

An invite-only grand opening event of the rebuilt facility is scheduled to be held on April 25th, 2023.
