UNCW Joins Recycling Competition to Eliminate Electronic Waste


SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has joined the Campus Race 2 Zero Waste Electronic Recycling Competition, with the aim of eliminating waste. It will compete with other leading universities in the U.S. and Canada in a friendly competition.

The competition will run for a period of eight weeks. It targets to achieve diversion of at least 90% of electronics from the landfill. As part of the competition, the campus will open collection sites at the UNCW Warehouse parking lot where discarded electronics can be dropped off during business hours.

In addition, collection site at Public Recycling Depot (5195 Lionfish Dr.) will be open on March 2nd and 16th from 10 AM to 2 PM. The site at DC Virgo Preparatory Academy (813 Nixon St.) will remain open during the same time on March 9th. Also, items can be dropped at UNCW’s Center for Marine Science (5600 Marvin K. Moss Ln) on March 23rd.

The accepted items include computers, monitors, keyboards, mouse, TVs, stereos, radios, microwaves, toasters, lamps (without bulbs), fans (without blades), power tools, string lights, extension cords, cables, wires, and any electronic that charges. However, CRT televisions, large appliances, batteries and light bulbs will not be accepted.
