Tire Recycling Company Reached Settlement Over Violation of Clean Water Act

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Liitleton-based FBS Tire Recycling has reached a settlement with the state Attorney General’s Office over alleged violations of Clean Water Act at its Ayer facility.

As part of the settlement, the tire recycling company will pay $62,000 to People of Ayer Concerned About the Environment (PACE). In addition, it will also have to reimburse the costs incurred to the AG’s office in connection with the case.

According to the AG’s Office, FBS Tire Recycling failed to manage stormwater runoff at its facility on Berkshire Boulevard, which in turn resulted in discharges to Bennetts Brook. Furthermore, it was found that the discharges frequently exceeded EPA benchmark levels for pollutants including lead, copper, zinc and aluminum, thus causing detrimental impacts to aquatic life.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell, in a statement, reiterated the commitment of the office to enforce violations of clean water laws to protect the quality of water and health of the surrounding communities.

Apart from paying fines, the company has also agreed to take necessary steps to control stormwater by “increasing stormwater monitoring, cleaning-up the facility, and enhancing stormwater management planning.”
