SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Reno residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous materials, electronics and other difficult-to-handle items at a city-organized collection event this weekend.

The disposal event is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, at Reno High School, beginning at 9 a.m. Collection will continue until the available containers are full. Residents are advised to arrive early because disposal capacity is limited.

The City of Reno is encouraging households to use the event to dispose of unwanted items. It warned that placing hazardous materials in regular garbage leads to serious risks. For instance, lithium batteries can pose a fire risk if damaged or crushed inside waste collection vehicles, while some household chemicals and paint can release harmful fumes.

Accepted household hazardous waste during the event includes paint, pesticides, algicides, gasoline, oil, cleaning chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and large batteries, including lithium batteries.

The event will also accept electronic waste such as televisions, microwaves, computers, mobile phones, lighting equipment and household electrical appliances. Residents may additionally bring one large appliance, including a refrigerator or washer/dryer, as well as up to seven tires per household.

Each household can dispose of no more than half a standard pickup-truck bed of hazardous and electronic waste.

The event is specifically for hazardous and electronic waste; regular Waste Management containers will not be available, city officials noted.
