Notre Dame Launched Efforts to Boost Campus Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): University of Notre Dame has launched renewed efforts to boost recycling efforts on campus. It must be noted that the recycling on campus had witnessed drastic fall due to prohibition of plastic bags for the collection of recyclable materials following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Austin Poyar, sustainability program manager and Geory Kurtzhals, senior director of sustainability noted that the Office of Sustainability at Notre Dame is in efforts to rebuild trust in recycling and spread it across the campus. The roll out of the new blue recycling toters across the campus is part of these efforts, they added.

A total of 170 recycling toters have been installed across 46 buildings. The recycling infrastructure for the remaining buildings too will be distributed at the earliest. The toters will collect wide range of materials such as rigid plastic, paper, metal and glass. Meantime, cardboard needs to be placed in separate containers.

As per rough estimates, approximately 4,000 tons of recycling are collected from Notre Dame every week.

The Office of Sustainability highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about recycling at Notre Dame. The signage will be updated in order to provide a clear information as to what all items can be recycled and what cannot be.
