Fairfax County Launched Solar Panel Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) has officially launched a solar panel recycling program, as extension to the pilot project initiated in November 2022. The pilot project had accepted limited quantity of solar panels from both residential and commercial customers for testing purpose, at no cost to the County.

The program, implemented in partnership with PC Recycler, Inc. dba Securis, is expected to deliver significant boost to the County’s sustainability efforts. By offering a responsible and safe method for residents to dispose of their unwanted solar panels, the initiative aims to contribute to a greener planet.

Daniel Brooks, an environmental services specialist at the county’s Solid Waste Management Program noted that many of these devices are found to contain toxic heavy metals. By keeping these devices out of waste stream, the DPWES aims to protect the environment. The program will repurpose and reuse materials from solar panels. The county’s work will inspire neighbouring counties and towns to launch similar programs, he hoped.

Residents could bring their solar panels to drop-off sites at the I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 Landfill Complex Electronics Recycling area during regular hours. There will be no pickup services
