New Hanover County to Accept New Items for Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): New Hanover County, City of Wilmington will accept additional materials for recycling.

A partnership to this effect was signed between New Hanover County Recycling and Solid Waste and the Foodservice Packaging Institute, which will add single use paper products used in the foodservice industry to the list of recyclable materials. Accordingly, the City will now accept paper-based items like to-go cups used at restaurants and coffee shops as well as cartons used to hold liquids like juice, milk or stocks and broths.

Another material that is recyclable in New Hanover County is No. 5 plastic containers, which are mainly used as bottles for hygiene products like shampoo, lotion and soap, as well as takeout food containers and tubs. Also, spiral-wound containers used to hold stacked potato chips or unbaked dough can also be recycled now, said the County news release.

The individuals who wish to recycle the above items should ensure that they are empty and lightly rinsed to remove leftover residue.

Joe Suleyman, Recycling and Solid Waste Director noted that there is a need to promote recycling of additional materials as the amount of usable space in landfill is becoming smaller day by day. He termed the new partnership as exciting since it will help to keep containers out of landfill and give them a second life as reusable product.
