EPA Report Cited Surge in Recycling and Waste Management

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The 2021 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis report published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) points to long-term reductions in both the waste generated and the waste released from facilities across the country covered by the program in the four jurisdictions of Region 2.

Furthermore, the EPA noted that chemical releases from these facilities remained well below the pre-pandemic levels.

Commenting on the findings of the report, Lisa F. Garcia, Regional Administrator, EPA said that thelatest Toxic Release Inventory report for Region 2 is encouraging news, showing decreases over time in chemical releases and an increase in recycling and waste management. EPA hopes to build on this positive momentum and continue working with facilities and industry to further reduce chemical releases, she added.

As per data, the facilities in Region 2, comprising of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, New York, and New Jersey are found to use preferred practices like recycling. The facilities reported 12% dip in chemicals released to the environment in 2021, compared to 2012 levels. During the year, one-tenth of Region 2 facilities implemented new source addition activities, the EPA report noted.
