Miami-Dade County Approved Extension of Recycling Contracts

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Miami-Dade County, Florida approved extension of recycling contracts with WM, Waste Connections and Coastal Waste & Recycling, which were due to expire on 31st March, 2023. Accordingly, these contracts will now be valid until 31st March, 2025.

The County has been seeking new recycling contracts in place of the existing ones. However, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava suggested that it is better for the County to renew the existing contracts for an additional two-year period, instead of going ahead with RPF process for new vendors, which he thinks will not be able to complete before the 31st March deadline.

EPA Report Cited Surge in Recycling and Waste Management

The press release noted that the County’s Department of Solid Waste Management aims to spend $44 million on executing two-year extension of contracts. $17 million will be spent for Coastal Waste and $10 million for Waste Connections for collection and hauling services. Also, $17 million will be spent for WM for MRF processing services. Under the extended contract, Miami-Dade will pay $143.99 per ton to WM’s Pembroke Pines MRF. The costs will be revisited after one year.

The change in pricing is mainly on account of surge in costs of fuel, labor and trucks, in addition to inflation risks, noted County officials. It must be noted that original 15-year contract with WM was made in the year 2008.
