SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Residents will have an opportunity to securely dispose of documents, exchange children's items and give unwanted goods a second life during New Bedford’s upcoming Reuse & Shred Day.

The free community event is scheduled for September 19 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Keith Middle School and New Bedford High School. The event is open to everyone, regardless of where they live.

At Keith Middle School, attendees can bring up to two boxes of sensitive paper for secure shredding. Each box should weigh no more than 30 to 40 pounds. The shredding service will operate until 11 a.m. or until the truck reaches capacity. Participants are advised to arrive by 10:45 a.m.

A separate swap event will allow families to exchange gently used children's and young adult books, puzzles, games, toys, sporting equipment and other items in usable condition. No donation is required to participate.

New Bedford High School will host collection points for reusable household goods, clothing, books, artwork and other materials. Working but inefficient dehumidifiers will also qualify for a $30 Mass Save rebate.

Also, Youth Opportunities Unlimited will accept bikes in any condition, while a volunteer mechanic will provide basic repairs, including tire, brake, gear and chain services, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The events aim to encourage reuse, recycling and secure waste disposal while keeping usable materials in circulation.
