National Online Plastic Recycling Directory Goes Offline

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Film Drop-Off Directory listed by BagandFilmRecycling.org- the national online recycling directory for plastic bags and plastic films has gone offline, after around 20 years of operation.

The directory had played a major role in recycling by directing the public to over 18,000 store drop-off locations across the country, where they could take their plastic bags and films for recycling. Upon clicking the directory link, it gets redirected to a page which displays a message that the resource is no longer available.

Commenting on the development, Nina Bellucci Butler, CEO of Stina Inc., which manages the directory, noted that the decision was partly due to lack of funding so as to maintain credible recycling information on site.

Initially, the directory was funded by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) as part of their Wrap Recycling Action Program (WRAP) and promoted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), local and state governments. It was self-funded for almost a year, prior to closing down on Nov. 17, said Butler.

An earlier investigation by ABC News using digital trackers had revealed that plastic bags dropped at several of the stores listed on the directory were instead sent to landfilled or incinerated.
