Mitchell City Council to Decide on Accepting $1 Million Grant

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Mitchell City Council meeting scheduled for today will take a final decision on accepting a grant amounting to $1 million to it by the solid waste management grant program under the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

If approved, the grant will cover a significant portion of the city’s new recycling transfer facility. It would cover roughly 37.4% of the total projected cost to build the new facility next to the city’s landfill. The city estimates the total budgeted cost of the project at approximately $2.68 million.

The existing building used as recycling transfer facility at the old landfill site is not in good condition, noted Joe Schroeder, Public Works Director. Currently, the city staff has to sort the recycled material at the facility and haul non-recyclable items to the landfill, which is several miles away from the facility. The proposed transfer facility next to landfill site would significantly cut costs for the city.

Since 2020, following its contract with Sioux Falls-based Millenium Recycling, the sorting of recyclable collections from residents have been carried out at a facility on the southeast corner of Mitchell.
