Auburn to End Curbside Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Auburn’s curbside recycling program will come to an end officially on 28th June, 2023. Thereafter, the city will move towards a drop-off only model.

The city news release noted that the last biweekly curbside collection will be on June 28th. Effective that day, the city will make available a single-sort recycling container at the Auburn Public Works facility on Gracelawn Road for residents who want to drop off their recyclable materials. The container will be available 24 hours a day near the resident sand shed. Also, bins will be made available for compostable food waste.

The bin will accept commingled waste. The accepted items include recyclables such as clean glass, plastics (No.1 to 7), tin and aluminum cans, cardboard, newspapers, magazines and mixed paper.

According to City Manager Phil Crowell, the City has been paying $142 per ton for recycling. Meantime, sending the same material for incineration at the Maine Waste to Energy costs only $42 per ton. Moreover, the curbside recycling program had participation of only 7% Auburn households.

The decision came amidst opposition from the City’s Sustainability Working Group, who said that the decision to stop the recycling program was abrupt.
