Kent City Council Approved New Recycling Contract with Republic Services

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Kent City Council voted to end its recycling contract with the Portage County recycling center. Instead, it had decided to choose Republic Services, which will start providing biweekly recycling pickup to customers. Effective July this year, Republic Services will be the sole hauler for both trash and recycling. It must be noted that Republic Services currently offers weekly trash collection services as well.

The approval came with a 6-2 vote with opposition from council members Robin Turner and Heidi Shaffer Bish. Also, council member Tracy Wallach was absent during the voting held Wednesday.

Republic Services placed the cheapest bid of $3 per household pert month, which is much lower than the current price of $5.50 offered by the Portage County Solid Waste Management District. The county recycling center did not submit a bid as it was aware of Kent’s plan to engage a single hauler to handle both trash and recycling.

The contract with Republic Services, which will take effect July 1, 2023, will result in savings of $660,000 over the period of five years.

The county recycling center will remove the 95-gallon blue recycling cartons by end-June after the final pickup. The residents will obtain new bins from Republic Services at about the same time.
