SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The recent report published by the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) indicates that the U.S. landfill tipping fees recorded a jump of 10% in 2024. This is the largest increase recorded since 2022.
The report titled “2024 Analysis of MSW Landfill Tipping Fees” noted that the national landfill tipping fees averaged at $62.28 per ton, with large landfills charging more than $70. Additionally, it found that private landfills charged around 34% more when compared with public landfills.

The report, based on data collected from 351 landfills, provides comprehensive, data-driven insights into tipping fee trends across the U.S. waste industry. The report covers not only MSW fees, but also tipping fees for Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste and emerging waste streams like solar panels and wind turbine blades.
It provides national, regional and state-level tipping fee data for the previous year. An analysis by region indicates that The Pacific and Midwest saw the steepest fee increases during 2024.
The report noted that states with Waste-To-Energy (WTE) facilities were seen charging 28% more than non-WTE states. Also, C&D tipping fees are now become almost on par with MSW in several places.
