SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The illegal dumping ground on 1225, Columbia Drive, Belvedere Park will be soon upgraded to a site where residents could drop-off their hard-to-recycle materials. Live Thrive plans to open a Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) facility at the site by end-April this year.
The new facility is in addition to the already existing ChaRM facility at 1110 Hill Street SE, which is open for business on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new facility will accept a wide range of materials, including styrofoam, musical instruments, electronics, bikes, paint, chemicals, tires, textiles, mattresses, cooking oil, metals, appliances, glass and cartons. It will be open on alternate days from the Hill Street location, thus providing drop-off facility in Atlanta six days per week.
The Hill Street facility had only 5,000 visitors per year, when it opened in 2015. The number increased drastically to approximately 83,000 by 2023. Seeing the huge success of the facility, DeKalb County signed a memo of understanding with Live Thrive in December 2021 to open a similar facility in DeKalb. The recycling center is being built with $2.6 billion funding support from the County.
The County has promised to set up a farmer’s market on the eight-acre site.
