SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Memphis City Council members discussed plans for setting up a biomass campus and urban tree recycling center off North Watkins in North Memphis. The plan received support and criticism at the same time.
The representatives of Memphis Urban Wood stated that the proposed facility would act similar to a sawmill. The facility will recycle aged trees as well as trees that fall during storms. The facility will have electric equipment and will not use any chemical for processing. According to them, the recycling center will not lead to additional traffic in the area, as it expects to add only around one truck to the area during its business hours from 8AM to 4PM. It won’t result in noise pollution either, they noted.

However, a few members of the council raised objection. A few residents of the area too voiced their opposition to the facility. The facility will disturb the safety of the neighbourhood and destroy the peaceful life of people in the region.
The Council decided to hold the item until March 5. It directed the company to have more community engagement programs, so as to take people into confidence. The decision will provide additional time for Council members to have a detailed study on the proposal before arriving at a final decision.
