King County’s New Recycling and Transfer Station to Open in 2026

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The new state-of-the-art recycling and transfer station, in replacement of the aging South King County recycling center, is expected to open in 2026. The construction works on the new facility at 35101 West Valley Hwy S. had begun earlier this year.

It must be noted that the current Algona transfer station is nearly 60 years old. It has limited recycling and hazardous waste processing ability.

According to Joseph Basile, spokesperson for the King County Solid Waste Division, the new facility will reflect some of the recent changes in the recycled commodity market. It offers greater flexibility with regards to collection and processing of different materials. The proposed facility promises several upgrades and innovative features, Basile said.

Karen Herndon, capital project manager with the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks Solid Waste Division noted that the new facility has been designed in line with the country’s sustainability goals. The solar panels at the facility will meet almost half of the power requirements, thus reducing carbon footprints significantly. In addition, the water cisterns at the facility will help capture of rainwater for future use.

The facility will serve the cities of Algona, Auburn, Federal Way and Pacific.
