The first collection event is scheduled for May 22 at the Madison County Transfer Station, with additional dates planned throughout the summer.
The initiative supports INL’s broader research efforts focused on reclaiming scarce materials from discarded electronics for use in energy technologies and national security applications. The residents are encouraged to drop off thier unwanted electronic devices for environmentally safe recycling. The events will not only help in diverting waste from landfills, but will also result in recovery of critical materials.
Experts note that devices such as computers, phones and batteries contain essential resources including lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite, as well as high-value metals like gold, silver, palladium, copper and aluminum.
