Hawaii Launches Ambitious Electronic Waste Recycling Plans

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Hawaii announced plans to implement a new ambitious electronic waste recycling plan. However, electronics retailers in the country fear that it will add to their costs.

As per the new plan, the discarded electronics have to be collected and shipped to processing centers outside the country. It is the responsibility of the manufacturers to collect and ship used electronic items. By placing the full responsibility of e-waste management on manufacturers, the country’s Energy and Environmental Protection Committee hopes that manufacturers will be incentivized to pay more attention to the waste generated by the electronics industry.

The manufacturers are required to report the weight of products shipped by them. In addition, they need to submit plans for collection and shipment of used electronics. Each manufacturer must harvest 50% of the weight they shipped to Hawaii. The target will be raised to 60% and 70% in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Meantime, the industry expressed concerns over the weight targets, as many electronic devices including televisions are getting lighter day by day.

The law will be applicable to televisions, computers, tablets and printers. However telephones, devices with less than 4 inches screen size and those inside vehicles and appliances will be exempted.
