Fire-Hit Scrap Metal Facility to Suspend Operations

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The province of New Brunswick has decided to suspend operations at the American Iron and Metal (AIM) scrap metal recycling facility until completion of investigation. The government, in collaboration with the Saint Jones Port Authority, had earlier decided to set up a task force to investigate the fire incident at the site during the past week.

Also, the authority has ordered to close off the port terminal until the task force team carries out thorough assessment of all events that led to the event. Further, the port officials announced that an investigation on the company’s lease will be scrutinized to figure out violations of conditions, if any.

Craig Bell Estabrooks, CEO, Saint John Port Authority noted that the port’s paramount priority is the safety of its community. The port is steadfast in its commitment to the health and safety of its community, he added.

Meantime, the city voted in favour of a motion that proposes to scrap the facility entirely. The motion tabled by Greg Norton, which calls for shutting down AIM for good and not allowing similar operations by companies on its waterfront or in the city in future, was approved by a 7-3 vote.
