EPA Grants to Boost Tribal Recycling Initiatives


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of a series of investments called the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling program for Tribes and Intertribal Consortia, has allocated recycling grants totalling millions of dollars to various tribal groups.

The EPA grant funding is aimed at helping tribes improve and expand their recycling infrastructure, thereby promoting circular waste management practices, which in turn will help to protect the environment along with creating job opportunities for community members.

As part of the program, the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians have been awarded a grant of $653,120. They are only one among seven tribal groups in California to be selected as recipients of the grant.

Darin Koupal, Environmental Director stated that the grant funding is expected to deliver 20% surge in waste diversion.

Martha Guzman, EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator noted that EPA is proud to award the grant which will support Shingle Springs in their efforts to increase recycling rates. It will boost waste removal from Tribal land and create good-paying jobs for the tribal community.
