Westminister, Colorado to Have Centralized Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The City of Westminister, Colorado, will have a centralized recycling facility this spring. Consequently, the city’s four existing recycling sites will close, said officials.

The new facility will be located at 6020 West 91st Avenue. It will be operated by SustainAbility Recycling, in partnership with Westminister. The opening of the facility will result in closure of the current unsafe recycling sites, which are unstaffed and unfenced, thus resulting in illegal dumping and materials exceeding bin capacity which causes contamination.

The proposed center is centrally located, being within 10-minute driving distance for more than 80% of the residents. It will be staffed with up to five members, so as to help residents drop off their recyclables, said Chris Lindsey, Assistant City Manager. However, the annual operating cost of the centralized site is estimated to be higher than the cost of managing the four sites, he added.

According to city website, the existing drop-off sites at Fire Station 1: 3948 W. 73rd Ave., Municipal Service Center, 6575 W. 88th Ave., Municipal Court: 3030 Turnpike Dr. and West View Recreation Center: 10747 W. 108th Ave. will be closed following a 30-day transition period.
