SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Washington Financial Bank recycled more than 1,600 pounds of electronic waste at the first Cyber Security Awareness Shred Event. The first-of-its-kind event was held in partnership with Cyber Crunch and was open to the general public as a cybersecurity awareness initiative.
The event attracted a steady crowd. All the materials collected during the event were recycled in compliance with the federal, state and local laws and in line with R2/RIOS requirements. Cyber Crunch ensured that all the data is securely destroyed, the materials shredded and recycled responsibly to produce raw materials, which in turn could be repurposed.
Anthony Brozovich, Information Security Manager at Washington Financial Bank noted that most devices that are no longer used by people still contains private information. These information are vulnerable to malicious acts, thus making it important to sanitize the information and the devices that hold them, Brozovich added.
Barbara Flack, Director of Client Services at Cyber Crunch noted that the event has helped in bringing awareness of cyber security, which is considered to be everyone’s responsibility nowadays.
The success of the first electronic shred event has made the Bank think seriously about offering the complementary service every year.
