Clean Harbors Nebraska Plant Fined by EPA for Violation


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Clean Harbors incineration plant in Kimball, Nebraska has been fined by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The $270,412 fine by the authorities is towards hazardous waste management violations.

The company has been cited several times during the period from 2021 to 2023. The agency noted that the facility was found to have violated environmental laws like the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The company, in its recent earnings call, had admitted presence of a backlog of hazardous materials.

David Cozad, director of EPA Region 7’s Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division, in a statement, noted that mismanagement of hazardous waste leads to human exposure and environmental contamination. The penalty action on one of the largest hazardous waste disposal facilities in the country demonstrates EPA’s commitment to protect communities, he added.

Meantime, the company acknowledged the fines and noted that it has taken adequate measures to address the violations immediately in a responsible and transparent manner in consultation with the EPA.

According to EPA data, the Kimball facility incinerated over 35,000 tons of hazardous waste in 2021.
