Seattle Enacted Ban on Battery and Electronics Disposal

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Seattle Public Utilities has enacted a ban on disposal of battery and electronics, in a bid to prevent fires. The city-operated transfer stations had reported several fire incidents during recent times. The disposal ban came into effect on 1st January, 2024.

Many electronics and batteries contain heavy metals and other hazardous substances. These pose serious risks to human health and the environment. The leakage of metals and acids from batteries are potential causes of fire, thus causing risks to staff vehicles and collection facilities.

The items included in the disposal ban are lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium and other rechargeable batteries, as well as button cell, zinc, alkaline and other types and cathode ray tubes.

The state has already passed a battery EPR law in May last year, the provisions of which are set to commence in July 2027. The ban at local level, being implemented now, will help address the unsafe and improper disposal of batteries and electronics.

The frequency of fires occurring at Seattle waste transfer stations has witnessed notable increase, which has become a real concern for authorities. The City’s waste collection system handled over 650,000 pounds of batteries in 2022.
