City Officials Apologize to Residents for Halt in Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Clearwater, Fl officials have extended apology to its residents, after discovering that the collected recyclables were not processed for the past five months.

The residents raised complaints on social media in October last year, about their recyclables not being processed, which was when the issue came to the notice of the City. They alleged that the recyclables were either piling up on the curbs or being sent to the Pinellas Waste-to-Energy plant along with the garbage. When contacted, the city's solid waste department replied that the city's recyclables were being properly processed.

Later in November 2022, the waste recycling contractor, Waste Management (WM) sent a letter to the city, saying that it intends to terminate its contract with Clearwater, since it had not delivered recyclables to WM’s Ybor City recycling facility since June.

Bryant Johnson, solid waste assistant director cited several issues including staffing issues and equipment failures for not sending recyclables to the WM facility.

Following the incident, the City announced major changes to solid waste department administration team. According to interim City Manager Jennifer Poirrier, Johnson was made to resign. Furthermore, it has directed the department that all recyclables collected by the city be sent to its recycling vendor on a daily basis.
