City of New Orleans Received EPA Funding to Boost Recycling Infrastructure


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced grant of approximately $4 million to the City of New Orleans towards recycling improvement projects. The funding will help the city expand its recycling infrastructure and waste management systems.

$4 Million Federal Grant to Boost Recycling

The City press release noted that the EPA funding will help it to expand the existing residential curbside recycling program to all eligible households across the city. As a result, nearly 73,000 new households will gain recycling access. Also, it will replace as many as 10,000 legacy recycling carts.

In addition, the city will develop a 10-year master plan for solid waste management, which will evaluate recycling infrastructure capacities, explore opportunities for organics diversion and formulate policies to aid waste diversion in multifamily and commercial operations. A good portion of the funding will go towards projects that benefit disadvantaged communities, it said.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell stated that the City is honoured to have been selected for the federal grant, which will undoubtedly help to boost recycling rates, expand recycling infrastructure and educate public o becoming more environmentally-responsible.
