Alpena County to Build New Recycling Center, Offer Glass Recycling Services


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The recycling program in Alpena County is headed for a revolutionary change. The newly formed recycling authority unveiled plans to construct a new recycling center, which will offer a range of new services, including glass recycling to its customers.

It must be noted that Alpena, Alpena County, and all of the townships in the county had voted in approval of a recycling authority named the Northeast Michigan Materials Management Authority, who will be responsible for overseeing the recycling operations in the County.

The new recycling center will be built on Airport Road, the cost of which is estimated at around $5.4 billion. It has already received $2.7 million grant from the federal government, $500,000 from Alpena County, $1 million from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and $30,000 from corporate grants. The grants from the U.S EPA as well as the U.S. Economic Development Administration is awaited.

Cindy Johnson, chairwoman, Alpena Recycling Recovery Board stated that the authority is yet to have its policy and procedures in order and bylaws finalized. Meantime, the recycling activities will be supervised by the Alpena Recycling Recovery Board until the new authority takes charge.
