Chesapeake Drop-Off Locations Posted Surge in Recyclable Collection

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Chesapeake city authorities announced that collections at drop-off locations have exceeded expectations. Last summer, the City Council had voted to end city-funded curbside recycling and instead switch to recycling drop-off centres, despite opposition from residents.

The collection data suggests that residents have wholeheartedly embraced the new system. The recyclables collection through green containers surpassed 3,000 tons, thereby resulting in significant savings. The cancellation of curbside contracts and opening of the drop-off sites has saved the city around $2.2 million.

During the previous year, the drop-off center at the Municipal Center location reported collection of approximately 850 tons of recyclables, thus emerging as the most popular site in the city. Also, Russell Library site stood second with total yearly collection of almost 730 tons.

The City plans to expand the recycling drop-off sites to other areas, especially in the Airline Boulevard corridor. It also plans to establish and Integrated Material Recovery Facility. It must be noted that the Total Fiber Recovery plant in Chesapeake is set to open by end of the current year.
