Audi, Redwood Materials Launched Consumer Electronics Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Nevada-based Redwood Materials- the leading lithium-ion battery recycler, in partnership with Audi, announced launch of a new recycling program for consumer electronics.

The program will collect end-of-life batteries from cell phones, electric toothbrushes and other lithium-ion-powered devices from consumers. Redwood Materials will place recycling bins at select Audi dealerships across the U.S. in the forthcoming weeks, where consumers could drop off their batteries and devices. The items collected will be responsibly recycled by Redwood to be used in the manufacture of new items.

The accepted items include laptops, cell phones, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric toothbrushes, vacuum cleaners, power drills and other rechargeable devices.

As per estimates, around 15 million tons of lithium-ion batteries are expected to reach their end-of-life by the end of the current decade. At the same time, the global demand for lithium-ion batteries is projected to witness six-fold surge over the decade.

Surprisingly only less than 5% of devices containing lithium-ion battery gets recycled, mainly due to lack of adequate programs to collect and recycle them. The partnership between Audi and Redwood hopes to find a solution to this problem and boost recycling of these items to be used in manufacture of new electric vehicle batteries.
